COPA for Kids

The results are in and COPA Flight 176 has reported that this year's COPA for Kids event held on August 27, 2016 at the Villeneuve Airport (CZVL) was a resounding success. Two hundred and ninety excited kids experienced their first ever airplane ride, surpassing the previous number of 248 kids.

The one day event joined 23 aircraft and 24 pilots from all over Alberta and one helicopter from Red Deer. This wouldn’t have been possible without the dedicated organizing committee.

The day started with a pilots briefing outlining that slower aircraft would fly at 4500 feet and faster aircraft at 5000 feet and that each flight was scheduled to last between 18 to 21 minutes.

Youth and parents lined up early to register to get their pilot and aircraft assignments. Following a 30 minute ground school session covering regulations and safety procedures and aircraft information, pilots and kids took-off for their flights. At the end of the flight, each participant received a signed log book as a memento of their first flight and had the opportunity for photos in front of Mike Bellamy's Shinn / Varga aircraft in Alco's hangar. A big thank you to Paul Sissons and his crew of aircraft marshals, who kept all aircraft safely staged and stowed all day for everyone to enjoy.

Nav Canada controllers at the Villeneuve Tower went above and beyond to support this event. Edmonton terminal controllers were equally up to the task of keeping all the aircraft properly spaced within Terminals Class C airspace. One of the Nav Canada controller’s said it was the busiest he has been in his entire career.

The day ended with countless smiles, especially from the pilots who brought tremendous excitement and happiness to so many kids who probably would not have had a chance to enjoy the wonderful world of airplanes.

A big thanks goes out to Edmonton Airports and all the volunteers who made this possible, as well as all the other wonderful sponsors, including:
