Aircraft Noise

Pilots flying to and from Edmonton International Airport follow procedures to reduce aircraft noise over surrounding communities. For example, flights taking off to the southeast should not make a right turn until they have climbed east of heavily populated areas of the City of Leduc. Noisier aircraft are required to fly further east before they can make a right turn. All pilots and controllers are made aware of local noise-abatement rules.

At least twice a year a white and blue aircraft will make repeated approaches to the EIA runways at low altitudes without the landing gear down.  These unusual manoeuvres are normal operations required for Instrument Landing Systems Flight Checks by NAV CANADA.  We will post notices on our website and noise concern line when a flight check is scheduled to occur, however the flight check schedule can be changed by NAV CANADA at the last minute due to weather, testing priorities, and operational factors.

Noise abatement regulations are reviewed by the Canadian Aviation Regulatory Advisory Council (CARAC) and approved by Transport Canada. Edmonton Airports has a noise advisory committee that can recommend noise abatement procedures. Members include residents of neighbouring municipalities and representatives of their elected councils.

For more information on how noise is managed at Edmonton International Airport, please refer to the Noise and EIA brochure.
